The study's findings were published in the journal Circulation Research, as reported by ScienceDaily.

Experts determined that several hundred neurons in the brainstem maintain stable blood pressure during sleep, wakefulness, and physical activity.

According to the researchers, the loss of these cells leads to abrupt blood pressure fluctuations, although average readings remain normal. Such variations may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.

Scientists also found that similar neurons are damaged in multiple system atrophy, a rare neurological disorder. The discovery could aid in developing new methods for preventing dangerous blood pressure fluctuations.
