OpenAI CEO dissatisfied that users keep RAM for themselves instead of giving it to data centers
Sam Altman stated that running artificial intelligence models on personal computers makes no sense given the limited supply of memory chips.

In his view, available hardware is more efficiently used through the cloud services of major providers.
Enthusiasts run open-source models on their own hardware to reduce dependence on cloud services. Altman considers this approach inefficient: resources are already scarce and are rarely utilized.
"From the perspective of global resource distribution, it is rather poor that each computer contains a portion of the world's limited DRAM supply, which operates only 5% of the time," Altman stated.
He believes it is more reasonable to load memory into cloud data centers, where the same capacities serve numerous clients.
The statement came amid a memory shortage. Due to the AI boom, manufacturers are shifting to server chips, causing DRAM prices to rise for regular consumers. As a result, many perceived Altman's words as a call to surrender scarce hardware to large corporations.
