Collins English Dictionary selects Word of the Year

Collins named 'mogging' the 2026 Word of the Year—a slang term for an attempt to overshadow or outdo someone or something.

The announcement was made on November 3 on the dictionary's website. Collins explained that 'mogging' describes an action aimed at becoming more noticeable than another person or surpassing them.

The term is believed to have originated from the youth abbreviation AMOG—Alpha Male Of the Group. According to the dictionary, the word is rapidly gaining popularity and is increasingly used by representatives of Generations Z and Alpha in a humorous and ironic sense when one person is overshadowed by another.

Collins Dictionary has been published by HarperCollins in Glasgow, Scotland, since 1979. In 2025, its Word of the Year was the term 'vibe-coding'.
